Emissions from vehicles are the single largest contributor to the County's carbon footprint (Chatham County Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2020). Reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions per mile traveled are going to be necessary to meet the County's goal of becoming carbon negative.

County Fleet

Chatham County’s fleet consists of many different vehicle types from solid waste transport trucks to economy passenger cars. As older vehicles are replaced, the county is looking towards battery electric, hybrid, and high fuel efficiency vehicles as a way to lower the government’s carbon footprint. The County currently has two Nissan Leaf and two Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles in the fleet. The fleet also includes a number of hybrid vehicles. Below are images of the Solid Waste & Recycling's Nissan Leaf.

Bicycle Plan

The Chatham County Bicycle Plan was completed in 2011 and outlines steps to develop several loops of varying lengths throughout the county for recreational riding.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Over the last few years, Chatham County has been actively pursuing grant funding to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations in strategic location around the county. As of spring 2024, Chatham County has been awarded grants for installing four public charging stations.

One of these is a DC fast charging station at the Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q restaurant in Siler City. The others are level 2 charging stations, located at the Agriculture and Conference Center near Pittsboro, a County office building in Pittsboro (964 East St), and the Goldston Library in Goldston. Below are images of the EV charging stations at Smithfield (with Taco Bell in the background) and the Agriculture and Conference Center.

Visit the Carolina Country website to learn about the different types of EV charging stations.

There is an EV Charging Station Finder map on the County’s website that shows both the location and type of all the EV charging stations in the county. The map also gives a way for users to provide updated EV charging information, such as the location of new stations or notice that a station is not working.
