The Solid Waste & Recycling Main Facility holds different events throughout the year at our Main Facility. Check back here as we will add events and details as they are available.

Household Hazardous Waste Events 

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) events are a way for residents to safely dispose of HHW. The HHW events are typically held the third Saturday of each month, from March to November from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Decals are required at HHW events except for residents who live within certain town limits. Visitors must show something with an address of where the waste is coming from.

Mulch Sales

Each year mulch that is created from the yard waste disposed of at our Main Facility and sold during mulch events. Saturday mulch sales begin in March and run through May. Mulch is also sold (or given away for free) on Wednesdays throughout the summer and fall, while supplies last. Visit our mulch sales page for more details. 

Document Shredding Events

Solid Waste & Recycling schedules two document shredding events per year, typically in April and November. The 2026 document shredding events are scheduled for Saturday, April 18 and Saturday, November 21 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Main Facility- 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro.

Chatham County residents can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents from their household for free shredding. This service provides an opportunity for residents to safely destroy and recycle old tax records, credit card statements, and other personal documents. 

Do NOT bring:

• CDs, floppy disks, tapes, or similar items.
• Folders- empty the files and donate or recycle the folders.
• Already shredded paper- it will clog up the machine; put it in a compost bin or throw away. 

This service is for residents only; businesses are not allowed, including home businesses (past or present).
