The Solid Waste & Recycling Main Facility includes the Main Office, yard waste disposal, tire disposal, mulch sales, Household Hazardous waste events, and additional events. 

Location

28 County Services Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312. Link to Google Map

We are located 6 miles west of Pittsboro. From Hwy 64 turn onto Renaissance Drive. After turning onto County Services Road, the Main Facility is the first building on your right through the gate.

Hours

The office is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Note: The scales close at 3:30 pm. For any item requiring use of the scales, people MUST weigh in by 3:30 pm. This includes yard waste, inert debris, and tires. 

This facility is CLOSED on all State Holidays and Juneteenth every June 19th.

Events at the Main Facility

There are numerous events offered throughout the year at the Main Facility. Visit our Events at the Main Facility page for details. 

Items Accepted at the Main Facility

Please note that we cannot guarantee we will have someone to help unload any large items at the Main Facility. It is best to bring someone to help unload. All loads must be secured. Learn more about securing your load.

Batteries- Household and vehicle batteries. Do NOT tape batteries yourself. Bring to the Main Office building. Batteries are also accepted at the 12 Collection Centers and Household Hazardous Waste events. 

Christmas Trees- For about three weeks after Christmas, residents can dispose of their Christmas tress for free. The dates will be posted on the Solid Waste & Recycling calendar. Only real trees can be accepted. All decorations, stands, and pots must be removed. Natural wreaths can be accepted as well if they are removed from the wire. After these dates, trees are accepted for our normal yard debris charge of $25 per ton, with a $2 minimum.

Cooking Oil

Electronics- Electronics of any size or weight from residents with a current decal. Residents without a decal, small businesses, and non-profits can recycle electronics with a $5.00 charge for some items. Learn more about the Electronics Recycling program.

Fluorescent Lightbulbs- 2 foot and 4 foot tube fluorescent lightbulbs, small LED bulbs, compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs, or the curly kind).

Helium Tanks- Bring to the Main Office building. All other types of tanks (Coleman, propane, oxygen, etc.) must go to a Household Hazardous Waste event.

Inert Debris- Brick, concrete, rock, clean dirt/soil/sand. No painted brick or concrete. No mixed/other construction & demolition debris. $35 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale.

Pesticide Containers- Must be triple-rinsed. Learn more on our "How do I dispose of..." database for Pesticide Containers. Come into the Main Office building to receive instructions. 

Recycling for Residents- Free recycling is available to residents (no decal required). The recyclables will need to be off-loaded by hand into various containers. Each container has a sign. Come to the Main Office building with any questions. Anyone with a large load of recycling may be able to unload directly onto the Recycling Station tipping floor. Recycling for Businesses- Free recycling is available to businesses. Each container has a sign. Come to the Main Office building with any questions. Scrap Metal & Appliances- Any item that is least 90% metal can be recycled in the scrap metal bin. Refrigerators and freezers MUST be emptied before disposing of them. 

Styrofoam- Empty and clean Styrofoam packaging and food containers including foam cups, plates, take-out containers, egg cartons, and coolers. Food containers must be free of food and rinsed. Styrofoam cannot be really dirty. No packaging peanuts. All Styrofoam must be brought in a plastic bag. Bring it to the Main Office building. Learn more about Styrofoam on our "How do I dispose of..." database.

Tires- Learn more about tire disposal.

Yard Waste- Leaves, trees, limbs, shrubs, stumps, grass clippings, unpainted/untreated wood, and pallets. Learn more about yard waste disposal$25 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale.

Items NOT Accepted at the Main Facility

The Main Facility does NOT accept trash of any type. The Chatham County municipal solid waste landfill closed in 1993. All trash is taken to a landfill or transfer station, where it is ultimately disposed of in a landfill.

Trash from a household in Chatham County can go to a Collection Center, if the resident has a current decal.

Businesses are not allowed to use any of the Collection Centers. Businesses are defined as any income-generating endeavor, which includes builders, contractors, developers, rental properties, farms, livestock, home businesses, etc. All business waste must go to a transfer station or landfill for disposal or contract with a  for service.
