Starting October 2025, Chatham County is beginning a food waste drop-off pilot program. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of food waste that is disposed of in landfills. The food waste collected will be sent to a commercial composting facility to be turned into compost.

With the pilot, the food waste drop-off program is available at four of the Collection Centers:

  • Bonlee Collection Center
  • Cole Park Collection Center
  • Pittsboro Collection Center
  • Siler City Collection Center

Residents with a current decal can bring food waste to any of the drop-off locations. Roll carts will be used to collect the food waste, so residents will need to empty their food waste into the cart. Residents should use whatever container works best for them, but food waste kitchen collectors are sold at the Main Facility for $5.00 each.

A detailed list of what is and is not accepted in the food waste drop-off program can be found below. It can also be found on this printable flyer. Flyers are available at the drop-off locations.

The data from the pilot program will be analyzed to decide if the program will be expanded in the future.
