Soil Information and Maps

Soil maps are now available online. The advantage of this is that residents are able to access this information even if the local office is closed. Also, soil maps and descriptions can be customized by the viewer before printing out. These reports can also be saved electronically.

A current Portable Document Format (PDF) version of the soil survey can be accessed and downloaded for free through the Web Soil Survey, this survey may be viewed online, Soil Survey of Chatham County, North Carolina.. You may also purchase a compact disc (CD) from our office with the same Portable Document Format (PDF) file on it for $5. A paper copy of the data (does not contain maps) is also available.

There are a few different ways to access soils information for specific locations: 

1. Visit the Web Soil Survey page. Here you can customize maps, make Portable Document Format (PDF) print outs, tailor soils reports to fit your needs and save it all electronically to your computer. Click here for instructions for using Web Soil Survey. 

2. View soils data in real time on your iPhone and Android! Visit the iPhone App Store or the Google Play Store to download the SoilWeb app that allows you to view the soils beneath your feet in real time using the Global Positioning System (GPS) built into your phone

Historical Aerial Photography

Historical Aerial Photography is now available online through Chatham County's GIS portal. Maps going back to 1955 are available. After accessing the Historical Aerial Imagery Application, use the slider at the bottom right to move through available years. Use the search bar at the top left to locate specific parcels or addresses.

Georgeville: The Official Soil Series of Chatham County

Georgeville soil series, first established in 1910, was adopted as the official soil series of Chatham County in February 2020 by the Chatham Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. In Chatham County, Georgeville soils predominantly occur east to west along Hwy 64 from the west bank of Jordan Lake to approximately five miles southwest of Siler City.
