About PrEP
PrEP, otherwise known as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a once-a-day medication for adults and adolescents that protects against HIV. The medicine acts as a shield, preventing the HIV virus from attaching to your cells. PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV, which is higher than condoms alone (although using condoms and PrEP together offers the best protection against all STIs and pregnancy).
PrEP can give you peace of mind if you are worried about contracting HIV through sex or injection drug use. PrEP has been used to prevent HIV for over a decade and is highly effective.
Most people who take PrEP report no side effects. To learn more about PrEP, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’s #PrEPared page.
PrEP is not a substitute for condoms or birth control. PrEP does not protect against pregnancy or any other STIs besides HIV.
