Mission/Overview

The mission of the Planning Board is to advise the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on planning, zoning, and subdivision issues.  

Roles and Responsibilities

The Planning Board was created on February 5, 2007.

  • Monitoring trends related to land use,
  • Proposing needed amendments to the land use plan,
  • Establishing development principles and guidelines,
  • Proposing ordinances for orderly development in accordance with the land use plan,
  • Determining whether proposed developments conform to the land use plan and development principles, and
  •  Keeping the Chatham County Board of Commissioners and the public informed on planning issues and reasons for board recommendations.

The Planning Board also has a Code of Ethics and Rules of Procedure. 

Membership and Terms

All members of the Planning Board are appointed by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners (BOC). Each commissioner has two appointments, including one residing in the commissioner’s district. The terms expire when the appointing commissioner’s term expires. The full BOC also makes one at-large appointment to the Planning Board.
