Mission

The mission of the Appearance Committee is to establish and oversee programs to enhance the appearance of the county. The Appearance Commission also reviews and comments on non-residential development, Conditional Zoning District site plan development, and Special Use Permit site plan development.  

Roles and Responsibilities

The Appearance Commission was created on April 20, 1992.

• Members should be educated or well versed in landscape design, landscaping architecture, plant knowledge, general engineering, grading, etc.
• Members create and maintain a list of suggested plant material based on the County’s diverse environment.
•  Members provide feedback to developers of a project that would bring conformity with adopted plans and regulations as they relate to appearance and environmentally sound practices.

The Appearance Commission also has Rules of Procedure.

Membership and Terms

Members of the Appearance Commission are appointed by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners for three-year terms. Each commissioner has one appointment, usually from their district, and the full Board of Commissioners makes two at-large appointments.
