WHERE: Chatham Arts Center

WHO: Deena Class, PhD is a botanical artist, farmer, and educator. With support from the Chatham Arts Council, Dr. Class is leading Stories in Blue: A Community Indigo Project: https://www.chathamartscouncil.org/stories-in-indigo.
Dr. Class recently offered a free community indigo dyeing event on her Pittsboro farm as well as several dyeing sessions with Chatham County Schools students. Each person dyed one square to take home and one that will be included in a community quilt.
At the Arts Center sewing sessions, participants will stitch dyed blocks together. No sewing experience is necessary. Through the quilt and the stories participants share, the project will carry forward the idea that indigo belongs to everyone. It will honor indigo not only as a color or craft, but also as a living thread that runs through generations and across cultures, continents, and communities.
The finished work will be revealed in late May and showcased in venues across the county by the Chatham Arts Council.

Deena gets profound joy from teaching others how to do the same. | Meet Kira Jones! | |
|
|
Kira started crocheting to keep herself from unraveling during the pandemic. Thanks to dear friends who helped her master the fiber art with sage advice and gentle reassurance, it wasn’t long before she realized she was hooked. She loves to continuously shower friends and loved ones with functional crochet and cute amigurumi creations. One of Kira’s proudest crochet accomplishments was unlocking the secrets of her great grandmother’s dish towels, traveling back in time as she studied every stitch to write a pattern. A writer, educator, and engaged community member, Kira’s life force comes from her love of the written word and desire to help others. Art making, meanwhile, has always been the quiet steady center and the joy that carries her forward—whether it’s cross stitching, sketching, painting elaborately themed designs on pumpkins, quilting, or learning to knit. Kira holds a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication from the University of Utah and a Master's Degree in Communication Studies from the University of Montana. |
