Health Insurance
Major Medical benefits are provided for regular employees scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week. Coverage is available through Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, at current group rates, for eligible dependents. The Health care plan also includes a pharmacy and a vision plan. Employee only coverage is offered free of charge.
Health insurance coverage for regular full-time employees is available on the first of the month following their first thirty (30) days of employment.

Dental Insurance
The County provides 100% coverage of two annual diagnostic and preventive care procedures. It also covers basic services at 100%. Major services are covered at 50%, after your $50 deductible is met. We provide group rates, for eligible dependents. Employee only coverage is offered free of charge.

Life Insurance
A $10,000 term policy is provided at no charge to all employees that qualify for health coverage through The Standard. Supplemental employee and dependent coverage up to $250,000 is available to eligible employees and dependents. Death Benefit of one times annual salary is provided by the Retirement System and the County, minimum $25,000 and maximum of $50,000.
The term policy is available on the first of the month following their thirty (30) days of employment.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Transparency in Coverage Files
As a self-funded employer, Chatham County is required to disclose detailed pricing information regarding their medical plan under the Transparency in Coverage Final Rules. This information includes in-network provider negotiated rates for covered items and services as well as historical payments to and billed charges from out-of-network providers. BCBS creates and stores the machine-readable files that house this data and they can be found here under “ASO Groups”.
Local Government Employees' Retirement System
For employees assigned to work 20 hours per week or more, participation in the NC Local Governmental Employee’s Retirement System is required. Employees are fully vested after 5 years of contributing service.
North Carolina 401(k) Plan and Optional 457
Chatham County contributes 5% of salary for all employees to the state 401(k) plan, managed by Empower. Employees may also enroll in an employee contribution only 457 plan.
Vacation Leave
Full-time employees earn from 12-25 days annually based on years of service.
Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn one day (8 hours) of sick leave per month, with the unused accumulation applying toward retirement benefits after meeting basic retirement qualifications. Chatham County does accept transfers of sick leave from other local jurisdictions and the State of North Carolina.
Petty Leave
Full-time regular employee will be allowed up to sixteen (16) hours of annual paid petty leave in addition to the designated sick and vacation leave. Part-time regular employee will be given petty leave in proportion to the time he/she worked. Any employee hired after January 15 of the year will receive a prorated amount of petty leave for that year.
Other Types of Leave
Chatham County also offers other types of leave such as Family Medical Leave, Court Leave, Educational Leave, Emergency Volunteer Service Leave, Funeral Leave, Leave Without Pay, School Activity Leave, Donated Leave and Workers Compensation Leave. We also recently added three new types of leave: Volunteer Service Leave, Tobacco Free Petty Leave Incentive and Paid Parental Leave.
Paid Holidays
New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and three days at Christmas.
Community Eye Care
Community Eye Care is a hardware-only vision plan. The eyewear allowance is completely flexible and can even be used on non-prescription eyewear.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Pre-tax accounts which can be used to pay for out-of-pocket medical, dental, vision or dependent care expenses, or uninsured medical, dental, or vision expenses. This program is provided by Flores & Associates.
Employee Assistance Program
Counseling Services available to all County employees and eligible dependents to assist in the treatment of problems. Services are provided in a private and confidential setting through Resources for Living.
Short and Long-Term Disability
Voluntary short-term disability coverage is available through One America. Voluntary long-term disability coverage is provided through The Standard Insurance Company.
