Cultural Awareness Observances
Chatham County recognizes that this world is rich with diversity and welcomes the opportunity to reflect on the observances celebrated by various cultures and populations. The acknowledgement of some of the diverse holidays and celebrations of employees and community members is an opportunity to enhance our workplace and community cultural awareness and understanding.
July 2026 Month-long observances
Disability Pride Month: is observed each year in July to celebrate the history, achievements, contributions, and identities of people with disabilities while promoting inclusion, accessibility, and equal rights. The month also encourages conversations about disability as a natural part of human diversity rather than something to be hidden or viewed only through a medical lens.
National Minority Mental Health Month: is dedicated to raising awareness of the unique mental health challenges experienced by racial and ethnic minority communities and promoting equitable access to culturally responsive mental health care. The observance also highlights the importance of reducing stigma, improving access to services, and addressing disparities in mental health outcomes.
Cultural & Awareness Days in July 2026
July 1: Canada Day: is the national day of Canada. It commemorates the anniversary of July 1, 1867, when the Canadian Confederation united the colonies of Province of Canada (which became Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into the Dominion of Canada under the British North America Act, 1867 (now known as the Constitution Act, 1867).
July 4 – US: Independence Day: is the national day of the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress formally declared that the Thirteen Colonies were independent from the Kingdom of Great Britain. The day marks the birth of the United States as an independent nation and is celebrated with patriotic ceremonies, community gatherings, and public festivities.
July 10: Baha’i: Martyrdom of the Báb: It commemorates the execution of The Báb on July 9, 1850 (observed on the corresponding date in the Baháʼí calendar, which often falls on July 9 or July 10 in the Gregorian calendar). The day honors the Báb's sacrifice, steadfastness, and central role in the origins of the Baháʼí Faith.
July 11th: World Population Day: is an international observance established by the United Nations to raise awareness of global population issues and their connections to sustainable development, health, human rights, and the environment. The day encourages informed discussion about how population trends influence communities and emphasizes that people should be able to make informed, voluntary decisions about their lives and futures.
July 12th: Malala Day: honors the life, advocacy, and global impact of Malala Yousafzai. The day highlights the importance of ensuring that every child—especially girls—has access to safe, inclusive, and quality education. It also recognizes the role that education plays in advancing equality, opportunity, and human rights around the world.
July 14: LGBTQ+: International Non-Binary People’s Day: is an international awareness day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating non-binary people while increasing understanding of gender diversity. The observance highlights the experiences, contributions, and rights of non-binary individuals and encourages greater inclusion and respect in communities, workplaces, schools, and public life.
The day falls midway between International Women's Day (March 8) and International Men's Day (November 19), symbolizing recognition of gender identities beyond the traditional binary categories of male and female.
July 18: UN: Nelson Mandela International Day: is an international observance established by the United Nations to honor the life, values, and legacy of Nelson Mandela. The day encourages people around the world to devote time to serving their communities and advancing causes such as peace, equality, justice, and human dignity.
July 18 marks Nelson Mandela's birthday. Rather than serving only as a memorial, the observance is intended as a global call to action, inspiring individuals to make a positive difference through acts of service, volunteerism, and civic engagement.
July 19th: Hijri New Year: marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic calendar. It falls on the first day of the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, the date of the Hijri New Year shifts by approximately 10 to 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar.
July 26th: Disability Independence Day: commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) into law. The day is recognized as a milestone in the disability rights movement in the United States and celebrates the progress made toward equal rights, accessibility, and inclusion for people with disabilities.
July 30th: International Day of Friendship: is a global observance established by the United Nations to promote friendship among peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals as a way to build peace and bridge divisions in the world.
The day highlights the idea that friendship—at both personal and international levels—can help reduce conflict, foster understanding, and encourage solidarity across differences.
