Chatham County Emergency Communication's Mission Statement

To receive and prioritize calls through the 9-1-1 Communications Center, give pre-arrival instructions to callers, and dispatch appropriate responders in an expedient manner to protect the life and property of citizens and responders.

Chatham County 9-1-1 Emergency Communications is a division of Chatham County Emergency Operations and is located in the Emergency Operations Center. The 9-1-1 center offers a fast, effective communications link between the citizens of Chatham County and emergency response personnel, 24 hours a day. The Communications Center has experienced, certified telecommunicators who dispatch for multiple agencies, including Fire, EMS, Rescue, and Law Enforcement. The Communications Center is the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) of Chatham County.

New Chatham County 911 Center

Chatham County Emergency Communications’ Primary Center is equipped with 16 console positions. Each console is outfitted with Southern Software Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), access to the Division of Criminal Information (DCI), a Hosted Vesta telephone system, an MCC 7500E radio system, and a mapping system that provides address points and cross-street information.

Below are the qualifications needed for consideration for an Emergency Communications Specialist position with Chatham County Emergency Communications. If you are interested in applying for a position please check the County Jobs link on the Chatham County Homepage.

 

Requirements

  1. Must be 18+ years of age 
  2. Must be a US citizen
  3. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent  
  4. Must have a valid North Carolina driver license 
  5. Cannot have a criminal record
  6. Must pass criminal background investigation and drug screen
  7. Must pass a panel interview
  8.  Must submit to a pre-employment physical and psychological evaluation
  9. Upon hiring, the candidate must submit to fingerprinting

 

Panel Interview

An interview panel consisting of selected Communications staff will conduct all candidate interviews. Following the panel interview, all applicants selected for hire must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and psychological evaluation at no cost to the applicant.

 

Communications Training Program
(6-Week Classroom Training)

This training is designed to prepare students for emergency telecommunicator duties, to meet the requirements of qualification standards for Public Safety Telecommunicator I. The course combines instructor presentations, student activities and simulation exercises to develop skills and knowledge in the field. The course will provide the student with knowledge of roles and responsibilities of an emergency telecommunicator, current technologies, interpersonal communications skills, telephone communication, call processing skills, call classification, TTY recognition and call processing, computer aided dispatch (CAD) and mapping technologies and functions, radio broadcast procedures, legal aspects and liability issues of public safety communications, stress management, Chatham County Standard Operating Guidelines and Procedure, CPR certification, Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), Division of Criminal Information (DCI) certifications, APCO training and certifications, Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant operations and notification, National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command System (ICS), equipment training, new career preparation, tour of Chatham County Communications, and remedial training.

Required Certifications for all Telecommunicators:

  1. DCI - Division of Criminal Information
  2. EFD - Emergency Fire Dispatch
  3. EPD - Emergency Police Dispatch
  4. ETC- Emergency Telecommunicator Certification 
  5. HazMat Awareness
