Chatham County uses Hart InterCivic’s Verity voting system, which is certified by the North Carolina State Board of Elections and meets federal and state requirements for security, accessibility, and accuracy.

What Equipment Will I Use?

Every polling site in Chatham County includes the following:

  • Verity Print: Used by election officials to securely print the correct ballot for each voter based on their residential district.
  • Verity Touch Writer: A ballot-marking device that lets voters make selections using a touchscreen. The machine prints a paper ballot for the voter to review before casting.
  • Verity Scan: A secure scanner that reads and records paper ballots. Voters insert their completed ballot into the scanner to cast their vote.

Each system is designed to protect the integrity of the vote while offering a user-friendly experience and accessible features for all voters, including those with disabilities.

Certification and Security

Before any voting system may be used in North Carolina, it must undergo a rigorous state certification process managed by the NC State Board of Elections. This process ensures systems are:

  • Reliable and accurate
  • User-friendly and accessible
  • Secure and incapable of internet or wireless connection

All voting systems in North Carolina use paper ballots—either hand-marked or marked by a ballot-marking device. These paper records create a verifiable audit trail.

Chatham County, like all 100 counties in North Carolina, complies with federal law requiring ballot-marking devices at every polling place. Military and overseas voters, as well as voters with visual impairments, may use a secure online portal to access and return their absentee ballot.

Below are the three components of the Hart InterCivic Verity voting system used in Chatham County. Each device plays a unique role in supporting secure, efficient, and accessible elections for all voters.
