Election Day Voting | Chatham County, NC

On Election Day, registered voters must vote at their assigned polling place. This differs from early voting, when voters may cast a ballot at any early voting site in the county.

When Are the Polls Open?

Polling places are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. Voters who are in line at their assigned polling place by 7:30 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

To avoid long lines, consider voting mid-morning or early afternoon, as mornings and late evenings tend to be busier.

Don't Forget Your Photo ID

After You Vote

To confirm that your vote was counted, check the “Voter History” section in the Voter Search. This update may take up to a few weeks following Election Day while the county completes the post-election process.

Do I need an ID to vote?

Can I register to vote on Election Day?

In most cases, registration is not available on Election Day. However, eligible individuals who become naturalized U.S. citizens or have their citizenship rights restored after a felony conviction after the regular registration deadline may register and vote on Election Day.

Voters who need to register or update their information should plan to do so during the early voting period using same-day registration.

Voters who need assistance must request it from an election worker. Individuals who are unable to enter the polling place due to age or disability may vote from their vehicle using curbside voting.

Once inside, voters who have difficulty navigating the site, marking their ballot, or understanding the process should ask for help from a precinct official. Assistance is available to ensure all voters can participate.

Can I photograph my ballot?

No. State law prohibits photographing or videotaping a voted ballot under Limited Access to the Voting Enclosure (N.C.G.S. § 163-166.3).

Photographing a marked ballot is illegal in part because the image could be used as proof in vote-buying schemes. Additionally, electronic communication while voting is prohibited to prevent disruptions and unauthorized assistance in the voting place.

Voters are allowed to bring printed voting guides or notes into the voting booth. Phones and electronic devices may be used to access candidate information or a slate card, but may not be used to take photos, record video, or communicate by voice, text, or email while voting.
