Accessible Voting at In-Person Sites
All early voting and Election Day locations in Chatham County are required by law to be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Each site includes at least one accessible voting machine. In Chatham County, we use the Hart InterCivic Verity Touch Writer, a ballot-marking device with accessibility features.
Voters may receive assistance from a near relative or legal guardian, or if eligible, from a person of their choice (except an employer or union representative). To request assistance, notify the chief judge upon arrival.

Curbside Voting
Voters who are unable to enter a voting site due to age or physical disability may vote curbside at all Chatham County early voting and Election Day locations. Look for curbside signs and parking spots near the entrance.
Upon arrival, follow the posted instructions or call the number on the sign to notify poll workers. Voters must sign an affidavit affirming eligibility for curbside voting.

Accessible Absentee Voting
Blind and visually impaired voters may request and complete an accessible absentee ballot online through the NC Absentee Ballot Portal. This tool supports screen readers and allows digital or typed signatures.
- Accessible absentee ballots are available for elections that include federal contests
- The deadline to request is typically two weeks before Election Day
Assistance for Voters in Care Facilities
Residents of hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other facilities may receive help voting by mail through a Multipartisan Assistance Team (MAT) coordinated by the Chatham County Board of Elections. MATs are trained, impartial teams authorized to assist with voter registration, requesting and marking absentee ballots, and mailing ballots.
If a voter with a disability needs assistance, they may also choose someone outside the MAT to help—such as staff at the facility or a trusted individual—as long as certain legal conditions are met.
