Any registered North Carolina voter may request, receive, and vote by mail using an absentee ballot. This method offers a convenient way to vote from home.

How to Request an Absentee Ballot

Requests must be made in writing on an official form created by the State Board of Elections and signed by the voter, a near relative, or a legal guardian.

Deadlines for Requests and Returns

  • Request Deadline: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5:00 PM the second Tuesday before Election Day
  • Voted Ballot Return Deadline: Must be received by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day
New election law states ballots not received by this time cannot be counted. This does not apply to UOCAVA voters.

Note: Deadlines for Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) voters may differ. See the Military and Overseas Voting section below for details.

Tracking Your Absentee Ballot

Once an absentee ballot has been requested, individuals may track its progress from printing to acceptance through BallotTrax. Notifications are typically available approximately 30 days before the election.
