Over 3 in 10 Chatham County grandparents that live with their grandchildren have assumed parental responsibility. Roughly half of these grandparents that live with their grandchildren remain in the workforce in some capacity.
Throughout the next year, Aging Services is here to support grandparents - and their grandchildren - who walk hand-in-hand on this special journey.
As a grandparent, you've stepped up in a multitude of ways. Now, alongside your fellow grandparents raising grandchildren, we want to have your back.
How will we do this?
- Aging Services plans to hold two "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren" events each month, beginning in August and running through July 2027.One monthly meeting will be a support group meeting conducted by William Riggsbee, Aging Services Family Caregiver Specialist. These events will alternate between the Pittsboro Center for Active Living (365 Highway 87 North) and the Siler City Center for Active Living (112 Village Lake Road).
Both grandparents and grandchildren are encouraged to attend. Before the meeting, a fellowship lunch or dinner will be held depending on the time of day. Aging Services volunteers and employees will be on hand to socialize and interact with grandchildren while the support group takes place.
- The second event each month will be a presentation from one of our valued community partners. These events will take place at either an Aging Services center, or a partner venue to be announced. Stay tuned to this page for the latest information regarding Grandparents Raising Grandchildren meeting locations and times.
- New families are welcome to attend and join the program at any point during the year. There is no cost to participate.
