Chatham County Aging Services has a variety of programs and support groups to aid caregivers at any age. Among them are:
- Caregiver Respite - Let us help you take that much-needed break and time out of the home with two program options to meet your needs. For more information, contact William Riggsbee, Family Caregiver Specialist, at 919-545-8422 or email william.riggsbee@chathamcountync.gov. We offer in-person, email or telephone consultation.
- Caregiver Support Group - Share the challenges and success of your own caregiving journey. Our Caregiver Support Group meets the first and third Mondays of each month at 3 p.m. at the Pittsboro Center for Active Living (365 Highway 87 North, Pittsboro) and on the second Tuesday of every month at the Siler City Center for Active Living (112 Village Lake Road, Siler City) beginning at 10 a.m. On the last Monday of each month, the group meets virtually via Zoom starting at 6 p.m. Please contact William Riggsbee for logon information.
- Durable Medical Equipment - Aging Services also offers a durable medical equipment loan program. The premise is simple - individuals sign out equipment as needed and, when no longer needed, simply return the item to us. Examples of available equipment include wheelchairs, canes, bath benches, shower chairs, bedside toilets and more. For more information, contact Wynne Fields, Aging In Place Specialist, at 919-545-8419 or email wynne.fields@chathamcountync.gov
- Grandparents Raising Grandchildren - Designed for a population caring for roughly 13 million grandchildren in the United States, this monthly support group will share resources as well as challenges and success stories. The group meets the second Monday of every month at the Siler City Center for Active Living beginning at 1 p.m.
- Incontinence Supplies - A fixed income can often mean that needed adult incontinence supplies are a luxury item. Our partnership with the Diaper Bank of North Carolina and grant funding from the Family Caregiver Support Program assists us in meeting this need for both men and women in Chatham County. For more information, contact Wynne Fields, Aging In Place Specialist, at 919-545-8419 or email wynne.fields@chathamcountync.gov
- Powerful Tools for Caregivers - A six-week program that aids caregivers in taking care of themselves on this journey, this series provides resources to reduce stress and improve self-confidence while locating helpful resources.
- Voucher Program - Take a break! Modeled after successful state-run programs such as Project CARE (Caregivers Alternatives to Running on Empty) and the NC Lifespan Respite Program, eligibility is open to anyone over the age of 60 as long as the care recipient has physical or mental needs that impact their daily lives, such as dementia, difficulty dressing, preparing meals, toileting or getting out of bed without assistance. Through this program, reimbursable respite care can be provided by anyone who is not a family member.
