COUNTY ATTORNEY:

Chatham County contracts with Poyner & Spruill to provide general government legal services. Emily Meeker with Poyner & Spruill serves as the principal legal advisor to Chatham County.

      MISSION: 

To render fair and impartial legal advice to the various departments of Chatham County government, and to assist in creating a responsive, open, accessible and socially just interaction with all citizens. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Poyner & Spruill is retained by the county and appoints a principal attorney that serves as chief legal officer of the county. Major responsibilities are:

  • providing legal advice to the Board of Commissioners, County Manager, and all departments of Chatham County government
  • representing the County in all legal matters, including real estate transactions, planning issues, lawsuits, and tax collections
  • preparing and reviewing legal documents for the Chatham County and its various departments, such as contracts, deeds, ordinances, agreements, easements, etc.
  • promoting open, fair and impartial processes and procedures for the operation of County boards and departments, including the Board of Commissioners, Planning Board, Environmental Review Board, Health Department and Department of Social Services
