NC Cooperative Extension to Host Free Cattle Reproductive Management Workshop in Pittsboro

Pittsboro, N.C. – N.C. Cooperative Extension’s Chatham County Center will host a free Cattle Reproductive Management Workshop on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to help regional beef producers improve herd performance and overall profitability. The educational event will run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center, located at 1192 U.S. 64 West Business in Pittsboro. Dr. Felipe Silva, an Assistant Professor and Extension Beef Specialist with North Carolina State University’s Department of Animal Science, will lead the workshop. Dr. Silva’s research focuses specifically on practical strategies to optimize pregnancy rates, reduce costs, and maximize efficiency within cow-calf operations.

The workshop will cover several critical areas of herd management:
• Breeding seasons: Establishing structured, profitable production schedules.
• Heifer management: Selecting and developing replacement heifers for long-term operational success.
• Reproductive efficiency: Implementing actionable, evidence-based steps to boost herd pregnancy rates.
• Reproduction economics: Navigating and analyzing the financial impacts of management decisions.
• Crossbreeding strategies: Utilizing proven genetic pairings to maximize calf performance.

A live, open question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, giving local farm operators an opportunity to secure direct, expert feedback tailored to their specific herds. “Whether a producer is looking to fine-tune an established reproductive program or build a brand-new strategy from the ground up, this workshop provides the evidence-based tools needed to make smarter business decisions," Extension organizers said. While admission to the workshop is entirely free, advanced registration is required. When you RSVP online, you'll have the option to reserve and purchase an $11 meal.
