Chatham County Public Libraries Awarded $60,000 Grant to Expand Digital Literacy Through Play-Based Learning

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County Public Libraries has received a $60,000 Libraries Strengthening Connections grant to enhance digital literacy programming through play-based learning and hands-on exploration. The initiative introduces interactive technology designed to build skills, encourage creativity, and support learning for residents of all ages.

“Chatham County Public Libraries is thrilled to be a recipient of the Libraries Strengthening Connections grant which focuses on learning through play and exploration to build digital literacy,” said Christy Bondy, Director, Chatham County Public Libraries. “Using this approach introduces technology in an informal and welcoming environment. It fosters collaboration and creativity through engaging activities and games that can be enjoyed across generations. The new technology has been a big hit so far!”

Library_GRANTWHAT: Chatham County Public Libraries Digital Literacy Expansion Project
• (6) AWE Learning Stations featuring 85 bilingual educational games (math, sight words, shapes, alphabet)
• (3) Touch2Play tables with intergenerational games for all ages
• Mobile SMART Board for instructional programming at Chatham Community Library
• Additional laptops to be added in the upcoming fiscal year
• Each branch equipped with 2 AWE Learning Stations and 1 Touch2Play table

This program is designed for Chatham County residents and visitors of all ages, with a focus on families, and provides opportunities for informal learning through play, exploration, and hands-on technology use. The equipment is currently in use at Chatham Community Library and Wren Memorial Library.
Participants can engage with interactive educational games, build foundational digital skills, and explore collaborative learning experiences in a welcoming environment.

Library_GRANT_2Library staff worked with Brenton Hart and Sidney Cheek in the Chatham County Manager’s Office to secure the grant, which is funded through federal Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) established under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 and administered by the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT).

The grant supports the expansion of educational technology across all library branches, with a focus on engaging, intergenerational learning experiences that make digital tools more accessible and welcoming.
