Chatham County Announces 2026 Household Hazardous Waste Events

PITTSBORO, NC — Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling, in partnership with the Town of Pittsboro, invites residents to participate in Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) events. These events provide a safe and responsible way to dispose of hazardous materials from homes and help protect public health and the environment by ensuring that hazardous products are properly handled and disposed of.
“This partnership between Pittsboro and Chatham County helps accomplish the environmental goals we both share,” said Kevin Lindley, Environmental Quality Director. “By providing Town and County residents a way to properly dispose of their hazardous waste, we are preserving landfill space and protecting the natural environment for years to come.”

Household_Hazardous_Waste_Events_2026WHAT: Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event – Safe disposal of household hazardous materials for eligible residents. No business waste or trash will be accepted.

WHERE: Across from the Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Main Facility, 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

WHEN: Third Saturday of the month from March through November, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

• May 16
• June 20
• July 18*
• August 15
• September 19
• October 17
• November 21*

*The Chatham County Sheriff's Office will be on-site during these HHW events to conduct a medicine take-back from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these collection events to safely dispose of items such as household chemicals, paints, cleaners, automotive fluids, pesticides, and other hazardous materials that should not be placed in regular trash.

“The Town of Pittsboro is excited to partner with Chatham County’s HHW program,” said Public Works Director Daniel Snipes. “Pittsboro residents now have greater access to safe disposal options for hazardous household materials. This partnership helps ensure these products are handled property and supports our shared commitment to environmental stewardship.”

HHW events are open to Chatham County residents who have a solid waste decal and to residents who live within the town limits of Cary, Pittsboro, and Siler City. All residents will be asked to show a driver’s license or another item displaying the address where the waste originated.
Residents who live within the town limits of Apex and Goldston and do not have a decal are not permitted to use the HHW facility. These towns are not currently part of the HHW program.

Town residents may also choose to pay the county solid waste fee and purchase a decal if they wish to access the program.
