Chatham Community Library Hosts Lecture on Enslaved Poet George Moses Horton in Observance of Black History Month

Pittsboro, NC — In recognition of Black History Month, Chatham Community Library, in partnership with Community Remembrance Coalition Chatham (CRC-C), invites residents to attend a lecture presented by Professor Glenn Hinson, titled “Hustling for a Bit of Liberty: The Activist Eloquence of Enslaved Poet George Moses Horton.”

This free and public program will explore the life and work of George Moses Horton (c. 1798–after 1867), the first African-American author published in the United States. Horton, known as the “Slave Poet,” lived in Chatham County from 1800 until the end of the Civil War and used poetry to express his experiences and the world around him.

About the Speaker:
Professor Hinson, a folklorist and faculty member in the Anthropology and American Studies Departments at UNC, teaches courses on African American expressive culture, racial reckoning, and public memory. He is also the founder of the Descendants Project, a community-based initiative that uncovers erased histories of lynching in North Carolina, traces family histories of victims, and collaborates with communities to honor these memories.
