SILER CITY, NC — Community members of all ages are invited to celebrate Creek Geeks Field Day, a free, family-friendly outdoor event focused on local waterways and environmental education.

The Chatham Soil and Water Conservation District is collaborating with Biocenosis, the Town of Siler City Parks and Recreation, Loves Creek Watershed Stewards, and additional community partners to host this engaging event along Loves Creek.
Attendees will be able to participate in a variety of interactive activities, including:
• Hands-on investigation of Loves Creek health looking at aquatic critters (macro invertebrates).
• Learning about plants along the banks of the creek and how they help keep mud out and provide habitat for terrestrial and aquatic animals.
• Demonstrations of point and non-point source pollution using an EnviroScape watershed model
• A hands-on waterways activity with Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling
• Meeting staff from the Chatham County Watershed Protection Department to learn about local creek life and how daily actions affect water quality
• Learning about common snakes in the area and meeting friendly non-native snakes
• Learning about (and meeting) common turtles, salamanders, and other critters found in local watersheds
• Learning more about the Fig Buttercup, an invasive plant, from local educators and assisting with a removal effort at Loves Creek. Find out what to look for, how to report it, and how to team up with others in the community to help stop the spread.
Creek Geeks Field Day is part of Chatham County Creek Week, taking place March 14–21, which celebrates the four rivers and numerous creeks that provide water for residents, wildlife, and plants throughout Chatham County and the surrounding Piedmont region.
Creek Geeks may check in at the registration table at the Loves Creek Greenway trail head and should be prepared to sign waivers. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing that may get wet.
