WHAT: Music of the West African Kora in recognition to Black History Month
WHEN: Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
WHERE: Chatham Community Library at Holmes Family Meeting Room: 197 NC Hwy 87 N Pittsboro, NC 27312
The kora, a 21-stringed West African harp, has been played for centuries by oral historians known as griots, who preserve history, genealogy, and storytelling through music. Many of the songs performed on the kora reflect an 800-year history dating back to the founding of the Mande Empire. Audiences can expect an engaging and educational performance highlighting the rich cultural heritage of West Africa.
Sean Gaskell studied the kora in Gambia and Senegal and has presented programs at more than 350 libraries across the United States and Canada. He is based in Tacoma, Washington.
Diali Cissokho, a virtuoso kora player and percussionist from Senegal, comes from a distinguished lineage of Manding griots, with traditions passed down through generations.
Will Ridenour studied music in Mali and Senegal and blends traditional and modern influences in his original compositions. He has performed in 28 countries and collaborates with a wide range of artistic projects, including Paperhand Puppet Intervention.
Funding for this program is generously provided by the Friends of the Chatham Community Library.
