PITTSBORO, NC— On January 27, 2026, Chatham County rescinded its State of Emergency due to Winter Storm Fern.

Chatham County implemented the State of Emergency on January 22nd, authorized under Article 1A of Chapter 166A and Article 36A of Chapter 14 of the North Carolina General Statutes.

These efforts included Chatham County pre-staging North Carolina National Guard resources within the county ahead of the storm. This proactive step was made possible through close coordination with North Carolina Emergency Management and helped ensure a rapid, effective response as conditions evolved.

Chatham County’s preparedness and response efforts were the result of strong collaboration across County departments and partners. The County extends its sincere appreciation to Chatham County Emergency Operations, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Chatham County Fire Marshal’s Office, Chatham County Public Health, Chatham County Social Services, Chatham County Schools, Chatham County Aging Services, and Chatham County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources. Together, these teams worked before, during, and after the event to help protect residents and ensure the community was informed, supported, and prepared throughout the storm.

“I am incredibly grateful to the dedicated Chatham County staff who worked tirelessly to prepare for and respond to this event, as well as to our state and community partners for their strong collaboration and support,” said Amanda Robertson, Chatham County Board of Commissioners Chair. “I also want to thank our residents for their cooperation and preparedness. These collective efforts demonstrate the strength of our community and our shared commitment to keeping Chatham County safe.”

Although Chatham County’s declared State of Emergency has been lifted, Chatham County residents are advised to remain cautious while traveling, as icy road conditions may persist for several days. Governor Stein’s executive order declaring a State of Emergency for the entire state remains in effect.
