Chatham County Public Libraries Experiencing Delays in Book Ordering

Post Date:10/09/2025 11:25 AM

PITTSBORO, NC— Chatham County Public Libraries is currently experiencing significant delays in book ordering due to the sudden closure of its primary vendor, Baker & Taylor. This development affects the ability to fulfill existing order obligations and support for library acquisitions at all branches (Chatham Community Library, Wren Memorial Library, and Goldston Public Library).

Chatham_County_LibrariesBaker & Taylor, “one of the largest suppliers of library content, software, and services to public and academic libraries in the U.S.,” has announced plans to shut down its business. According to a Publishers Weekly article, at a town hall meeting on October 6, 2025, Baker & Taylor owner and CEO Aman Kochar said he “does not see a sustainable path to keep the library wholesaler in business.” The article also notes that B&T has laid off over 500 employees, cancelling severance plans, and the business will “wind down” by January.

Library management is working swiftly to replace the vendor and restore full operations and has implemented contingency plans to minimize disruption. Library patrons will continue to receive updates via social media and email newsletters.

Patrons may check the library’s online catalog for updated inventory. They are encouraged to utilize existing print collections and electronic content through Libby (eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines), Kanopy (video streaming) and Comics Plus. Information about these services can be found online at www.chathamlibraries.org. Individuals may also contact their local branch for information.
