Flooded Roads and Storm Damage Prompt Safety Warnings in Chatham County

Post Date:07/07/2025 10:30 AM
PITTSBORO, NC— Following the recent impacts of Tropical Storm Chantal, Chatham County NC officials are advising residents to use caution and remain informed as response and recovery efforts continue.

Chatham County Emergency Communications (911) has received a high volume of calls related to weather impacts, including flooded roads, vehicles in standing water, and other transportation-related incidents. Emergency personnel are actively assessing conditions and coordinating with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to respond as needed.

Several roads across the county are currently closed due to storm-related flooding and damage. Notable closures include:
• NC-902 near Chatham Central High School
• Gilmore Road, off Poythress Road in North Chatham

Additional closures may occur as conditions evolve, and assessments continue. Residents are encouraged to check local traffic updates and follow guidance from county officials and NCDOT.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as emergency crews and transportation officials work to assess and address storm impacts,” said Bryan Thompson, Chatham County Manager. “Limiting travel helps ensure that these teams can do their work safely and efficiently.”

To support recovery and ensure public safety:
• Avoid driving unless necessary.
• Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. Even shallow water can be dangerous or hide road damage.
• Allow emergency and transportation crews the space and time needed for response and assessment.

Chatham County will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates through Chatham County 911/Emergency Management and its official communication channels.

“The safety of our residents and responders is our top priority,” said Steve Newton, Chatham County Emergency Management Director. “We strongly urge everyone to stay off the roads if possible and to avoid driving through floodwaters. Turn around—don’t drown.”
