Chatham Community Library will host "Music of the West African Kora" with a trio of musicians: Sean Gaskell, Diali Cissokho, and Will Ridenour on Saturday, February 7, from 2:00 - 3:00 pm in the Holmes Family Meeting Room. This program is free and open to the public.
The kora, a 21 stringed West African harp, will delight listeners. The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800 year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire.
- Sean Gaskell studied the kora in Gambia, and Senegal. He has presented programs at over 350 libraries in the United States and Canada, and hails from Tacoma, WA.
- Diali Cissokho, a virtuoso kora player and percussionist from Senegal, comes from a long line of Manding griots, whose role as historians and storytellers has been passed down through generations.
- Will Ridenour studied in Mali and Senegal and blends both traditional and modern influences with his original melodies. He has performed in 28 countries and works with a variety of artistic ventures including Paperhand Puppet Intervention.
This program is free and open to the public. Funding for this program is made possible by the Friends of the Chatham Community Library.
