Chatham Community Library will host a presentation by the Mud Dauber School of Natural Building on Saturday, November 1, from 10:00 am - noon in the Holmes Family Meeting Room. This program is free and open to the public.
Join us for an overview of natural building! Natural builders use materials that are locally-harvested, natural, and non-toxic. Common materials are clay soil, straw, wood, stone, and sand. Photos and information about a variety of wall systems and concepts, including cob, straw bale, and natural clay plasters will be shared. These techniques can be used on projects as large-scale as a home, or as small as a pizza oven or bench. There will also be samples of some materials to touch and interact with!
For the last 16 years, the School has been teaching educational workshops as well as taking on design/build contract projects in the central NC area. Co-founder and instructor Greg lives in a strawbale home that he and his wife Danielle built, using clay dug by hand from the property (for plasters, and floors), strawbales from a local farm, wood trim and siding from a local sawmill, and many salvaged materials. In addition to building, they enjoy growing food in the family garden, bicycling and hiking in the woods, making art with their children, and cooking.
